Martin Andermatt (born November 21, 1961 in Baar ) is a former Swiss football player , coach and official. As a player, he became Swiss champion and cup winner with the Grasshopper Club Zurich in the late 1980s . Most recently, he was a member of the Supervisory Board at Hannover 96 until 2019 . In the meantime he had a mixed career as a coach.

Player career

As a player he was active at SC Zug , FC Baar, FC Emmenbrücke , FC Wettingen , Grasshopper Club Zurich and FC Basel . With Grasshopper Zurich he won the championship and the cup. At that time he also had a regular place in the Swiss national football team .

Coaching career

He began his coaching career at the Swiss football club FC Emmenbrücke, where he was player coach from 1995 to 1997. He then moved to FC Winterthur for one season . In the 1998/99 season he worked for FC Baden before moving to SSV Ulm 1846 on March 31, 1999 . With Ulm he rose to the German Bundesliga in 1999, only to be relegated to the Second Bundesliga the following season. There he was released on September 19, 2000. The next coaching station was from June 1, 2001 to March 8, 2002 also in the second division Eintracht Frankfurt . After a leave of absence in Frankfurt, he returned to Switzerland for one season in 2002 for FC Wil .

When he switched to FC Vaduz in 2003, Andermatt also became the coach of the Liechtenstein national football team . Andermatt celebrated historic successes with the national team in the Principality of Liechtenstein: a 2-2 win against Portugal and a little later a 4-0 victory in Luxembourg. On the other hand, there was a 1-0 defeat against San Marino in April 2004 - their only international win at all.

After the Vaduz team led the Challenge League for a long time in the 2004/05 season and in May 2005 slipped to second place four laps before the end after a minor crisis, Andermatt was released from his duties. He remained Liechtenstein's national coach until he took over as coach of the Bernese Young Boys in October 2006 .

At the beginning of the 2008/2009 season, Andermatt was given a leave of absence from the BSC Young Boys on July 30, 2008 after a failed start, with only one point from three games . On October 12, 2009, Martin Andermatt started as coach of FC Aarau . His predecessor Jeff Saibene lost his coaching position after 12 rounds and 5 points. Even under Andermatt, the balance was not better: In the 17 games with him on the sideline, the FCA won a single win (6: 3 against Bellinzona) and 6 points. On April 12, 2010, FC Aarau announced that it had separated from coach Martin Andermatt and his assistant Alexander Weiss with immediate effect. According to the press release, the reason was the unsatisfactory results. In December of that year he returned to his roots and became involved as a consultant for his home club FC Baar. On May 23, 2011 Andermatt took over the coaching position at the relegation-threatened AC Bellinzona for the last game of the season . He was given leave of absence from AC Bellinzona on May 28, 2012 because promotion was missed. At the end of December 2012, his return was announced and he was awarded a contract until the end of the season. This was not extended. From January 2014 to June 2015 he was trainer of Zug 94 in the first division .

official

Andermatt has been one of eight supervisory boards at Hannover 96 since November 2016 and, according to the club management, is responsible for “strategic development”. In October 2019, his position on the supervisory board and his consulting contract with the association were terminated.

Others

  • Andermatt has a UEFA Pro license as a coach
  • The Swiss media ascribe particular strengths such as discipline and perseverance, but also psychological sensitivity in dealing with “difficult” players to the trained primary school teacher
  • Andermatt is married and has two sons and a daughter. His son Yves (born February 28, 1986) is a soccer player himself and was a right-back at FC Luzern II (2005), FC Kickers Luzern (2006), BSC Young Boys II (2006–2008) and FC Emmenbrücke (2010–2012) active.
