In 1989 he moved to the first Swiss division for FC Aarau . He played for the club twice for three years each (1989-1993 and 1995-1998) and became champions with the club in 1993. In between he played at BSC Old Boys Basel , then in 1998/99 for a few months at FC Locarno . He ended his career as a player in 2002 with the Luxembourg club Swift Hesperingen .

National team

Saibene played 63 times for the Luxembourg national football team between 1986 and 2001 , but could not score a goal.

Coaching career

At the beginning of his coaching career - it was not allowed to be a footballer and coach at the same time - Saibene got a job as a coach at the Luxembourg Football Association: He looked after the Luxembourg U17, U18, U19, U20 and U21 national teams and was also co -Trainer of the senior national team under the Danish head coach Allan Simonsen . In 2006 Saibene returned to Swiss football and became assistant coach of FC Thun , with whom he was able to celebrate relegation as an interim coach at the end of the 2006/07 season .

Saibene trained - initially as an assistant coach - from the beginning of the 2008/09 season for the Swiss first division soccer club FC Aarau . After a bad start to the 2009/10 season, he was released on October 12, 2009. He later coached the Luxembourg U-21 national team . On March 8, 2011 Saibene was brought to bottom of the table FC St. Gallen to save the club from relegation, which he did not succeed. In the 2011/12 season , he was promoted directly back to the top Swiss league with FC St. Gallen. The club was at the top of the table from the second day of the game, which it did not give up for the entire season. In the 2012/13 season Saibene led FC St. Gallen as a promoted player to third place in the top division. For the first time in six years, FC St. Gallen played again in a European competition during the 2013/14 season . With the success in the play-off round against Spartak Moscow , Saibene also became the first Luxembourg coach to lead a club into the group stage of the Europa League. Saibenes contract term with FC St. Gallen was extended early by one year until summer 2015. At the beginning of September 2015 he offered the board of directors his resignation; the latter accepted the decision. At this point, his team had scored seven points in seven games and only scored four goals. In October 2015, Saibene signed a contract as head coach with FC Thun that ran until the summer of 2017.

On March 20, 2017, he took over the coaching position of the German second division Arminia Bielefeld in order to protect the club from relegation to the third division. Under Saibene, Arminia managed to stay in the league on the last day of the match through a draw at SG Dynamo Dresden . In the following season, on the penultimate matchday, the promotion to the first German Bundesliga was missed, at the end of the season Arminia Bielefeld took fourth place. On December 10, 2018, after nine league games in a row without a win and elimination in the DFB Cup in the home game against MSV Duisburg, he was released from his duties.

For the 2019/20 season , Saibene took over the third division team of FC Ingolstadt 04 as the successor to Tomas Oral . He received a contract with the relegated team until June 30, 2021. Carsten Rump , with whom Saibene had already worked in Bielefeld , was hired as assistant coach . After the 27th matchday, the club announced the premature end of the cooperation with Saibene and Rump. The team had not been able to win the last five games of the season and was no longer on a direct promotion place.

Others

Saibene is married to a Swiss woman and, in addition to being a Luxembourg citizen, also has Swiss citizenship .
