history

The name "Kehlen" comes from the Latin Callidovilla (country house of Callido), the settlement is documented from 636. Archaeological excavations and the discovery of Celtic tombs around Kehlen, Gallo-Roman cemeteries and Roman villas in the area of Nospelt indicate earlier settlements as well as Merovingian graves between Nospelt and Dondelingen.

Excavations of a Gallo-Roman villa

At the height of Schoenberg near Kehlen, at the intersection of two Roman streets, there was most likely a collection of Gallo-Roman buildings, as indicated by the discovery of a plinth depicting four deities. The original is kept in the State Museum; a replica was placed in front of the Schoenberg cemetery. The fact that Schoenberg was included in the list of national monuments is thanks to the chapel (choir of the former church) and the old tombstones from the beginning of the 16th century. The former parish church of Schoenberg, whose registers go back to the year 1637, was dependent on the imperial abbey of St. Maximin in Trier. Legend has it that there was a village on the Schoenfels plateau that disappeared after a plague; but no traces were found.

The localities Keispelt and Meispelt developed as a result of extensive clearing, which was promoted by the Franconian nobles and the Abbey of St. Maximin. In the Middle Ages they belonged to the Ansemburg rule, for which Keispelt was the main town.

Dondelingen (French: Dondelange) was known in the past for its two grain mills, which are documented as early as 1280 and 1328; but it no longer exists. The windows of the chapel dedicated to St. Hubert in Dondelingen depict hunting scenes.

The village of Olm, whose name is derived from the elm tree , was mentioned for the first time in 1528 in a "fireplace directory". Today it has over 1500 inhabitants, of which about 1200 are in the Huesekneppchen development area .

The social history of the community is shaped by farmers and craftsmen. With the industrialization of the country and the structural change after the Second World War , the majority of the population is now employed in the service sector.

Culture and sights

Museums and associations

One of the oldest centers for the manufacture of kitchen utensils from clay was located in Nospelt; the pottery trade ("Aulebäcker", 1819: 17 companies; until 1914) was known beyond the borders of the country. In the pottery museum, which is housed in the workshop of "Dittjes Neckel" (8, rue des Potier no. 13), one can admire, among other things, and above all the old kiln built since the beginning of the 20th century, in which the pottery material is still up to Fired in the 1930s. The operator of the museum, which is located at the Syndicat d'Initiative , can also regularly inspire the public with interesting exhibitions and detailed reconstructions. In 1973 a block of red sandstone was erected in the center of the village, in which the sculptor Léon Nosbusch carved the relief of a potter working on the disc.

A distillery museum has been located in Kehlen for several years. In a distillery building built before 1900, the production of schnapps is illustrated using the machines and devices of the time. Devices and tools show the development from 1900 to the present day. In a modern building next door, fine schnapps and liqueurs are produced by the distillery owner using the latest technology. As this museum is privately owned, visits can only be made by appointment.

An association that has existed for several decades, the “Georges Kayser Antiquities Researcher” with around 1200 members, carries out regular excavations for Celtic and Roman finds. A museum worth seeing is located in Nospelt itself on the Place de l'Eglise , where the settlement of the Romans and the Celts is reproduced using pictures, clothing and models. The found objects in the region are also worth seeing.

regional customs

At Easter, " Eemaischen " is celebrated, which ties in with the tradition of pottery in Nospelt. A wide variety of pottery is offered. Over the past few years, over 15,000 visitors have been welcomed regularly.

With over 350 licensed players, including 200 young people, it is one of the largest clubs in its area. The most outstanding players are Manou Scheitler (Jeunesse Esch) and Pitt Meyer (FCOlympique Eischen), both in the Luxembourg national team, as well as a now very successful coach Jeff Saibene, who is a native of Kehlen and at the same time more than 50 times national player.

The DT d'Peckvillercher Nospelt is a local table tennis club that was founded on August 16, 1956. With almost 100 active members, this has been alternating between the promotion and the 1st division for many years. By winning the women's championship and the cup, the women's team was able to achieve excellent results. The youth championship in the minimes category has also been won several times. The highlight of the last three years was undoubtedly winning the cup for teams below the top two divisions.

The Badminton Kehlen was founded on March 13, 1996, at the moment the first team belongs to the top division.

The BBC-Kielen is a basketball club that dedicates itself to its sport with great enthusiasm and dedication.

There is also a self-defense club, namely the Taekwondo club.

Gymnastic evenings are also offered by two gymnastics clubs from Kehlen and Nospelt, but these two clubs do not take part in official competitions.

nature

An 8 km long trail leads over the Nospelter district to the nature reserve "Telpeschholz", a heather and gorse landscape ; Another hiking trail with a length of approx. 10 km is also offered to hikers and nature lovers. For some time now there have also been so-called fitness trails for the residents of the community, 80% of which lead through the forest and are very pleasant to walk or run.

partnership

The partner community of Kehlen is Meckenbeuren in Baden-Württemberg, to which the village of the same name Kehlen belongs.
