Steinfort

Steinfort ( Luxembourgish Stengefort ) is a municipality in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and belongs to the canton of Capellen .

Surname

The former name of Steinfort was Steynenfurt and it is assumed that this name refers to the stony ford through the Eisch that once existed here . Geologically, Steinfort is located on thick layers of sandstone .

Transport and economy

Steinfort is on the Pétingen – Ettelbrück railway line . Sandstone was quarried in Steinfort as early as the Celtic and Roman times. The numerous quarries in the region point to the millennia-long importance for the region and the economy.

Until 1932 there was an Al Schmelz ironworks in Steinfort , for which the Steinfort reservoir was built.
