John Eales (born June 27, 1970 in Brisbane ) is a former Australian rugby union player who played in the second row . He was the captain of the Australian national team and active for the Queensland Reds club .

Prior to his rugby career, Eales was active in cricket . He also completed a psychology degree at Queensland University .

He made 86 appearances for Australia, 55 of them as captain. Only Will Carling and George Gregan get more missions as team captains. He played an important role in the two world championship titles in 1991 and 1999 and is one of the only six players, along with four compatriots and the South African Os du Randt , who have won two world titles so far. Eales has the most points of any striker ever in this competition with 402 points in the Super 14 .

After his active career, Eales started his own company called JohnEales5, which specializes in sports marketing. At the 2007 World Cup , he was one of the rugby ambassadors. In 1999 he was awarded the Order of Australia medal . He was the namesake of the John Eales Medal, which is awarded to the best Australian player at the end of a season. Eales has written a book, Learning From Legends, which deals with Australian legends from various sports.
