history
Prior to the introduction of super rugby, the Queensland Reds were a selection team made up of players from various clubs across the state. The first game between Queensland and New South Wales took place in 1882, the following year the Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) was formed. In 1896 the representatives of Queensland traveled to New Zealand for the first time . In 1899 they won for the first time against an international team, against the British and Irish Lions .
Because of the First World War and the competition from the Rugby League , there were no more games for several years, and the QRU was even dissolved in 1919. Only after the re-establishment in 1928 was gaming operations resumed. In 1950, the QRU rented the Normanby Oval for Reds games, and from 1966 the team played at Ballymore Stadium . On June 6, 1980, the Reds defeated the All Blacks .
From 1993, the Reds played in the Super 10 league and were divided into Group A. The Reds finished the first season in fourth group place. In 1994 they were group winners and won the final in Durban against Natal . The last time Super 10 was held in 1995, the Reds were again in the final and won against Transvaal in Johannesburg .
In 1996 the successor league Super 12 (since 2006 Super 14) was founded. The first season was the most successful so far. The Reds finished the group stage in first place. Then they lost the playoff semifinals at home against the Sharks from South Africa . In 1999 and 2001 the Reds suffered defeats in the semifinals against the Crusaders and the Brumbies . In 2006 the Reds moved from Ballymore Stadium to twice the size of Suncorp Stadium, and in 2007 they were the worst of all 14 teams.
In the 2011 season, the Reds won the championship title of Super Rugby for the first time after defeating the Crusaders in the final .
