history

At the current location of the stadium was the North Brisbane Cemetery , the main cemetery of Brisbane until 1875 . Due to the city's strong growth, it was decided in 1911 to close the cemetery and convert the area into a public park. In 1914 the area was fenced off and was named Lang Park after John Dunmore Lang .

In 1954 the park was leased by the city council to the Queensland Rugby League (QRL) for 21 years. In the years that followed, the QRL carried out various construction measures that resulted in Lang Park no longer being accessible to the public. In 1962 the Lang Park Trust was passed by parliament, which created the conditions for the construction of the Frank Burke Stand (1962), Ron McAuliffe Stand (1975) and Western Grandstand (1994).

On April 12, 1958, the first official rugby league game took place in Lang Park. In the following years some test matches of the Australian national teams of different sports took place. In 1960 Queensland played against France 30:18 in the rugby league , in 1962 the Australian national rugby league team played against Great Britain . In 1965, the game between Australia and South Africa was the first rugby union match in the stadium. 1970 completed a selection from Queensland against FK Dynamo Moscow for the first time an international football game. The first state of origin match took place on July 8, 1980 .

From 1955 to 1973 the stadium was the home of the Western Suburbs Panthers . The Brisbane Broncos have played at Lang Park from 1988 to 1992 and since 2003 .

In 1994, Lang Park was named Suncorp Stadium with the sale of the naming rights to the financial institution Suncorp-Metway .

In the late 1990s the decision was made to completely renovate the Suncorp Stadium. Only the Western Grandstand was retained, all other grandstands were demolished and rebuilt. The renovation began in 2001, was completed in two years and cost a total of AU $ 280 million .

In addition to its traditional use as Queensland's rugby league venue, the stadium is now also the state's main venue for rugby union and football matches.
