Events

The North Harbor Stadium ( English : North Harbor Stadium ) is located in Albany , a district of North Shore , the northernmost city in the Auckland metropolitan area . The stadium , which opened in 1997 after almost a decade in the discussion, planning and construction phase, is only used for rugby and football due to its rectangular playing surface . The region’s major cricket matches are played on the neighboring oval playing area .

construction

The North Harbor Stadium has an official capacity for 25,000 people. 19,000 seats, i.e. 76%, are seated, while the remaining 6,000 seats are distributed on the side grass dams. The large main stand is a futuristic-looking structure that is spanned by a characteristic curved roof. The main grandstand has three seating areas and several lounges. A total of 12,000 people are accommodated in the grandstand in the south of the playing area. Opposite the main stand there is an uncovered stand for 7,000 people. At the other two ends, i.e. in the east and west, there are heaped up grass dams, each offering space for 3,000 people. To the west is the scoreboard , while to the east is the screen for replays. Suitable lighting is provided by four 45 meter high floodlight towers .

Teams and events

The North Harbor Stadium is the home ground for the ITM Cup participating national team of the North Harbor Rugby Union , which was founded in the 1985th In addition, at least one home game of the Blues , the representative of the northern New Zealand North Island in the Super Rugby League, will be played at the North Harbor Stadium. On the one hand, the "All Blacks", the New Zealand national rugby union team , usually play the first home game of the season in Albany. On the other hand, the New Zealand Warriors , a New Zealand rugby league club, sometimes use the North Harbor Stadium for warm-up games.

From 2005 to 2007, the arena was also home to the New Zealand Knights , the only professional football team in the country. They played in the newly created Australian professional football league, the A-League , in 2005 , until they were no longer granted a license at the end of the 2006/2007 season. The sporting and economic success of the Knights could not build on the clubs playing in Australia; after the end of the season they were each last in the table and had an average attendance of only 3,000 people.

From 2019, the stadium is also used by the Baseball - Franchise Auckland Tuatara from the Australian Baseball League used. For this purpose, the venue is being subjected to extensive renovation work.

In 2008, North Harbor Stadium hosted the 2008 U-17 Women's World Cup . In addition to six preliminary round games, the final and the game for third place will be played in this stadium. Other venues are Waikato Stadium in Hamilton , Newtown Park in Wellington and Queen Elizabeth II Park in Christchurch .

Last but not least, the stadium is used for musical events. In addition to The Corrs , Luciano Pavarotti and Roger Waters from Pink Floyd were guests.
