Verzy is a French commune in the Marne department in the Grand Est region with an area of ​​1337 hectares (763 hectares of which is forest) and 974 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). The municipality belongs to the canton of Mourmelon-Vesle et Monts de Champagne , until its dissolution in 2015 it was the capital of the canton of the same name . The place is located on the northeast slope of the Montagne de Reims at an altitude of 284 m, surrounded by the Montagne de Reims Regional Nature Park . The distance to the northwestern city of Reims is 17 km. The GR 141 long-distance hiking trail leads through the village .

Verzy is known for its forest "Faux de Verzy", which was mentioned in the 6th century and whose name is derived from a numerically unique population of Süntel beeches .

history

In 575, the later canonized hermit Basolus (French: Basle) withdrew to the Verzy forest, where Nivard , Archbishop of Reims , had a Benedictine monastery built in 664 in honor of the pious man, which existed until 1652. In the monastery of Saint-Basle-de-Verzy, Archbishop Arnulf von Reims was indicted, convicted and suspended for infidelity at a national council in June 991 at the request of Hugo Capet , but was later able to resume his office.

During the Hundred Years' War , Edward III. his headquarters here to prepare the attack on Reims.

The abbey was burned down in 1652 by the soldiers of the Duke of Lorraine .

During the First World War , the French army set up an observation post and the so-called “Blockhaus de la Garenne” on the edge of the highest point above the place, the so-called “Mont Sinaï”.
