The Montagne de Reims (translated roughly: 'the mountains of Reims'; in Germany often called 'Reimser Hügelland') is a wooded geographical ensemble that lies between Reims and Épernay in the Marne department in the French region of Grand Est and is partly regional Montagne de Reims Natural Park (French: Parc naturel régional de la Montagne de Reims ) is protected.

geography

The term “Montagne” ( French for mountains) does not fit in view of the low altitude of the terrain: the highest point of the Montagne de Reims is Mont Sinaï at 286 meters. The impression of a mountain range arises from the fact that the edge of the ridge rises from the flat plain (80 meters) as a layer with a steep fault line a good two hundred meters high . The flat plain is part of the Paris basin and the Montagne de Reims is the first limestone layer that forms the eastern boundary of the Île-de-France , which continues south of the Marne as the "Côte des Blancs" .

Numerous champagne wineries are located along this limestone layer .

The 6,200 hectares of forest owned by local authorities are managed in a joint forest management facility, the Office national des forêts (ONF). The 13,800 hectares of private forest are subject to the condition of ensuring the continuity of the massif. More than 3500 hectares of forest in the nature park are considered habitats and are to be included in the Natura 2000 network. On the southern slope there is already a 1725 hectare area that was recorded there.

Natural park

The French natural park parc naturel régional de la Montagne de Reims covers a large part of the Montagne de Reims landscape and was founded in 1976. The 530 square kilometer park is best known for the Süntel beeches (a form of the common beech ), of which there are over 800 specimens. Süntel beeches look as bizarrely twisted as bonsai trees and rarely grow higher than 15 meters. The “Maison du Parc” nature park house is located in Pourcy.

fauna

The fauna consists of large mammals such as wild boar , deer , which were reintroduced in the 1950s, and deer . The small mammals are also represented, such as weasels , martens , ermines , foxes , badgers and wild cats .

There are also some reptile species typical of European forests, such as lizards .

The amphibians that are mainly found there are:

The bird fauna in these mountains is also very diverse and large. There are kestrels and birds of prey such as the common buzzard and the honey buzzard . The Montagne de Reims is also home to seven species of bats , including the great mouse- eared species .

flora

There are typical examples of the continental flora and the Atlantic flora in the nature park . In the massif there are mainly deciduous forests, there are many morbid trees and a lot of dead wood . The forests stand on a large plateau of clayey limestone covered with silt .

Oak groves dominate this area (60% oak ); there are also ash trees (10%), conifers ( Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and black pine ), red beech (Fagus sylvatica) and hornbeam . The acid-loving beech groves are due to the occurrence of sandy-silty soils. There are also clearings with limestone grasslands .

Dozens of square kilometers are covered by thickets and coppice . This shows the former use of the forest: for centuries people tried to produce as much (fuel) wood there as possible in the shortest possible time.

The Montagne de Reims appellation , an appellation d'Origine Contrôlée covering around 8,000 hectares , is also named after the forest region . The three grape varieties Pinot Noir , Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay are cultivated there (about 40:30:30). Wine towns include Vrigny , Coulommes-la-Montagne , Pargny-les-Reims , Jouy-les-Reims , Villedommange , Sacy , Écueil , Chamery , Sermiers , Villers-Allerand , Rilly-la-Montagne , Chigny-les-Roses , Ludes , Mailly-Champagne , Verzenay , Verzy , Villers-Marmery , Trépail , Ambonnay , Louvois , Tauxières-Mutry , Bouzy , Avenay-Val-d'Or , Mutigny , Ay , Dizy , Cumières , Hautvillers and Champillon .
