The Split Point Lighthouse is a lighthouse , the near Aireys Inlet , a small town on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria , Australia is. The Great Ocean Walk leads to the lighthouse.

history

Originally the lighthouse built in 1891 was called Eagles Nest Point . In 1919 it was switched to automatic mode.

The first lighting system consisted of Fresnel lenses made by the British. They are still in use today. However, the Birmingham factory was bombed and knowledge of how the crystals in the lenses were made has been lost, so if lost they cannot be replaced. A Japanese company estimated the cost of reinstallation on behalf of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority at more than AUD 1 million.

According to Australian lighthouse standards, red filters for flashes of light are sent to the extreme left and right of the danger zone for ships. Why this lighthouse worked with the opposite system for years is not known. Today it is corrected.

today

A 30-minute tour of the lighthouse has been offered since summer 2005, during which visitors have the opportunity to climb the original staircase to the balcony, which is below the lantern room. Visits were also possible in the 1990s, but only on a few days a year.

There is a cellular antenna at the top of the lighthouse. The lantern room cannot be visited as it is in operation.

The original buildings for the lighthouse keeper auctioned off for AUD 1 million in 2004.

Popular culture

The children's television program Round the Twist , popular in Australia , used the area around the lighthouse for several film scenes. The lighthouse is also in the detective story The New Shoe by Arthur upfield before in a murder scene.
