The Great Ocean Walk is a hiking trail in Victoria , Australia . The trail runs along the coastline in close proximity to the Great Ocean Road . It leads through an area that is characterized by a steep and weathered coast of limestone and sandstone , rocky cliffs and great views of the Bass Strait and the Southern Ocean .

path

The trail begins 200 kilometers southwest of Melbourne and extends for 104 kilometers from Apollo Bay to Glenample Homestead , near the Twelve Apostles . In its course the path leads through the Otway National Park . Every ten to 15 kilometers there are overnight accommodations, which hikers should reserve in advance. Guided hikes are also offered.

The path is not always visible from the Great Ocean Road and is easy between Apollo Bay to Cape Otway , but becomes more difficult later when you cross Ryan's Dan. It should also be noted that the waterline is subject to a tidal range .

There are seven camps at Elliot Ridge , Blanket Bay , Cape Otway , Aire River , Johanna Beach , Ryans Den, and Devils Kitchen . Blanket Bay , Parker Hill , Aire River and Johanna Beach are also accessible by vehicles.

On Blanket Bay and Parker Inlet there are disinfection stations against the spread of Phytophthora cinnamomi . Hiking trails may be closed to protect the fragile sand dunes and historical sites. Areas that are recultivated with indigenous plants are also blocked.

Road construction

The idea to build the Great Ocean Walk was born in 1974 and was resumed in the early 1990s. Planning began in 1994, construction began in 2001 and was finally completed and opened in 2006. Park Victoria invested AUD 2.3 million in the 91-kilometer section between Apollo Bay and Glenample . The existing 25-kilometer path was repaired by hand. When planning and building the paths, great importance was attached to the least possible interference with nature. The steps were built from local and imported natural stones ; this was only done on steep terrain and the installation and construction of the stairs was done with little use of machinery in order to protect nature. Stone bridges and a single wooden bridge were built to cross bodies of water.

In 2009, a 10 kilometer long path was laid from Moonlight Head to the tourist center of the Twelve Apostles .
