Apollo Bay is a coastal town in the state of Victoria in Australia, in the Colac Otway Shire . The community has 1,366 inhabitants. The place is named after the schooner Apollo, which was shipwrecked southwest in February 1846.

Geographical location

Apollo Bay is east of Cape Otway on the Great Ocean Road in a wide bay surrounded by rolling, open hills with pasture land.

economy

Originally the community lived from fishing and agriculture. Nowadays tourism is the main source of income.

Sights and attractions

The community has a 2 km long, gently sloping sandy beach and a small boat harbor.

Located in a central position on the Great Ocean Road, the place is a good starting point for excursions along this road and into the Great Otway National Park .

The first submarine telephone cable to Tasmania was laid from Apollo Bay in the 1930s . The Old Cable Station Museum , which is housed in the cable house built in 1936, commemorates this time with its collection of around 5,000 photographs. 1.5 km outside the village, the Mariner's Lookout offers a wide panoramic view of the sea and the community with the surrounding landscape.

Regular events

The Apollo Bay Music Festival takes place annually in March or April . The Apollo Bay and Otway District Show is held annually in January .

sports clubs

The Apollo Bay Surf Lifesaving Club , a typical Australian coastal community, was founded in 1952. He belongs to the general association Life Saving Victoria . The Apollo Bay Sailing Club offers young and old the opportunity to practice sailing as a popular sport.
