Coordinates: 38 ° 20 ′  S , 143 ° 55 ′  E The Colac Otway Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 3437.5 km² and has about 21,000 inhabitants.

Colac Otway is located on the south coast of Victoria about 150 km west of the capital Melbourne and includes the following towns: Cressy, Beeac, Pirron Yallock, Colac, Birregurra, Forrest, Gellibrand, Lavers Hill , Wye River and Apollo Bay . The seat of the City Council is in Colac in the center of the LGA, where about 11,900 inhabitants live.

The Shire is mainly agricultural and lives, among other things, from the dairy industry. The soil of volcanic origin and the rainy climate make the region very productive.

Tourism also plays a major role. In the north there is a flat lake landscape made up of former volcanic craters, while the south is formed by the forested Otway Ranges with their numerous waterfalls. And the coast is part of the Great Ocean Road and the Great Ocean Walk . From Otway Cape , the southernmost point of the Shire to the west of it located Moonlight Head is extending Shipwreck Coast , a 130 km long coastline dangerous, the 20th in the 19th century and early about 80 ships are to be a victim.

The Colac Otway Shire Council has seven members who are elected by residents of the four wards. One Councilor each comes from the Murray and the Warrion Ward, two from the Otway and three from the Colac Ward. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
