Wye River

Wye River is a small town in Victoria , Australia , and a river of the same name that flows through the town and flows into the ocean. The place is 155 kilometers west of Melbourne on the Otway Coast . The town on the Great Ocean Road is frequented by tourists from Lorne , which is 15 kilometers to the west. Recreation seekers from Melbourne also spend their holidays there since the Great Ocean Road was completed in 1932. Wye River had 63 residents in 2016 and over ten times that number during the holiday season.

history

The area was settled in 1882. The brothers Alex and Donald MacRea and their cousin Alex MacLennan were looking for farmland and fishing grounds and chose this area for this. The MacRaes built a farm they named The Wye , after a river in Britain . Alex MacLennan settled a little further west and named the place The Kennet , from which the later town of Kennett River arose.

The names of the rivers are certainly inspired by the River Wye in Buckinghamshire and the River Kennet , both rivers in Great Britain. The Wye River Post Office opened on January 19, 1914. From 1945 it was only a Telegraph Office . The residents received the mail from Lorne.

tourism

The area is known for its natural beauties like Great Otway National Park and surfing.

There are two caravan parks that are close to the main beach and there is also the Wye Valley Caravan Park , which is privately operated. There is a shopping center with a post office , snack bar, cafe and pub in the village .

Organizations

Wye River has a fire department and a Surf Lifesaving Club (Wye River SLSC).

The Wye River Surf Life Saving Club is a member of the Surf Life Saving Australia and has more than 100 active members who supervise the beach from late November to early April on weekends and holidays. This club continuously takes part in the regional carnival and in regional, state and international IRB Racing .
