history

The place was named after the explorer George Smythe, who named the Australian river after the River Kennet in Berkshire in Great Britain.

In 1882, brothers Alex and Donald MacRea and their cousin Alex MacLennan came to the area in search of farmland and fishing grounds. The MacRaes built a farm they named The Wye , after a river in Britain. Alex MacLennan settled a little further west and named the place The Kennett, which later became the place Kennett River .

The Kennet River Post Office opened on December 15, 1938 and closed around 1964.

tourism

The area is known for its coastal views, Great Otway National Park, and surfing opportunities. Tourists who want to see koalas can almost certainly see them in a one to two kilometer wide patch of forest on the Gray River Road , which branches off the Great Ocean Road .

Kennett River has a Surf Lifesaving Club (SLSC).
