The River Kennet is a river in Wiltshire and Berkshire , England . The Kennet arises in Avebury from the confluence of two unnamed tributaries. It flows first in a southerly direction, turns almost at right angles to the east at Swallowhead Springs . In this direction it runs to the mouth of the Foudry Brook in Reading , where it turns again almost at right angles to the north, and then flows into the Thames .
The Kennet and Avon channel is also known as Kennet navigation known and extends between Reading and Hungerford partially separated from the river bed and partially in the bed of the Kennet intermediate Hungerford and Eddington the barrel separates the River Kennet from the channel which has a connection to the Severn manufactures .
The River Kennet is protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest together with the Freemans Marsh and the Chilton Foliat Meadows adjoining it and its tributary to the River Lambourn .
