Surf Coast is located on the south coast of Victoria about 120 km southwest of the capital Melbourne and includes the following towns: Winchelsea, Moriac, Mount Duneed, Modewarre, Deans Marsh, Bellbrae, Lorne , Aireys Inlet , Anglesea , Jan Juc and Torquay. The seat of the City Council is in the coastal city of Torquay in the east of the LGA, which has about 13,300 inhabitants.

The Surf Coast Shire is the surfing stronghold on Australia's south coast. Torquay in particular is famous for its surfing beaches, especially Bells Beach . This was also the location of one of the most famous surfing films Dangerous Surf (1991).

Accordingly, the Shire lives from the numerous beach and surf tourists, especially the coastal cities of Torquay, Jan Juc, Anglesea, Aireys Inlet and Lorne, and also benefits from its proximity to the megacity of Melbourne. World-famous manufacturers of surfboards and clothing and other sports accessories such as Quiksilver and Rip Curl also come from Torquay .

Many LGA residents also work as commuters in the neighboring city of Geelong .

The Lorne Pier to Pub Swim takes place in Lorne on the first weekend of January in summer , which according to the Guinness Book of Records is the largest organized sea swim in the world. The swimming distance is 1.2 km.

Aireys Inlet was also the residence of one of Australia's most famous authors, crime novelist Arthur W. Upfield .

administration

The Surf Coast Shire Council has nine members who are elected by LGA residents. Surf Coast is not divided into districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
