Literature and media
In the early 1950s, Australian crime writer Arthur W. Upfield lived at Aireys Inlet. His novella The New Shoe (1951) is based on the town and the lighthouse. Some of the characters in the novel are based on local personalities.
Many scenes from the children's television series Twist Total were filmed in the Split Point Lighthouse area.
In 2005 the Bollywood film was wedding - no thanks! Filmed in Melbourne with a few scenes around Aireys Inlet, Fairhaven and Anglesea.
tourism
Many surfers spend their holidays in Aireys Inlet and use the well-known surfing beach Fairhaven Beach . Since this beach is subject to strong changes, surfing there is considered unpredictable. Swimmers should note that there is a strong current there.
The Painkalac Creek , which separates Aireys Inlet from Fairhaven, forms a salt lake behind the sand dunes before pouring into the ocean. However, due to the low water level in the inlet, the creek rarely reaches the ocean.
There is also a horseshoe-shaped reef at Step Beach , which is an excellent opportunity for swimming when the tidal range is at its lowest. The main tourist attraction of the place is the Split Point Lighthouse, which protrudes over the inlet and gives the place a distinctive mark on the Great Ocean Road.
Since the coastline is connected to Fairhaven, there is a long sandy beach, which is only interrupted at Aireys Inlet by a series of rocks, between which there are bathing beaches, most of which are quite lonely. Each beach has its own characteristics, which result from different length, location and nearby rocks. The beaches include Sandy Gully , Steppy Beach, and Sunnymeade .
When the tide is low, it is possible to hike along the beach or climb over the rocks. A view of the eastern beginning of the Great Ocean Road towards Anglesea is made possible.
1983 bush fire
Aireys Inlet was struck by the Australian bushfires of 1983 which burned down large numbers of homes. Shortly afterwards, interest in the area rose again and property prices recovered and have continued to rise to this day. The properties, especially those with ocean views, have seen prices rise and raise more than AUD 1 million .
