Anglesea is a city in Victoria , Australia . The city on the Great Ocean Road is 110 kilometers from Melbourne , 37 kilometers from Geelong and 18 kilometers from Torquay . In 2016, Anglesea counted 2,538 residents.

History and name

The original name was Swampy Creek and it was changed to Anglesea River in 1884 after the town was named a town . The name Anglesea comes from an island in north-west Wales . The Anglesea Post Office opened on April 16, 1886. In 1950 the city was renamed Anglesea.

In the summer months, many people looking for relaxation linger in the city, especially at Christmas and New Year, as well as during the Melbourne holiday season. Although the main beach offers good conditions for surfing, many surfers choose Government Beach , which they call Guvvos and is located west of Anglesea. Anglesea is known locally for its Riverbank Market , which is close to the river on Anglesea's main drag, on the Great Ocean Road .

The Angair Wildflower Festival takes place in September each year .

The Surf Coast Walk runs through town and can be continued either northeast on the coastline to Torquay or southeast to Aireys Inlet .

Sports

The Anglesea Football Club plays in the Bellarine Football League , the Anglesea Cricket Club in the Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association and the Anglesea Golf Club is located in the Noble Street . The golf course in town is known for the kangaroo population that lives there. Anglesea also has a skateboard ramp.

Anglesea offers inexperienced and experienced surfers, depending on the requirements, different sports options. The main beach and the beaches at Point Roadknight are suitable for beginners as well as for experienced and adventure- seeking surfers. The latter can surf in the north and south of the city, or on various reefs near the beach. The surfing areas can be reached by boat or by paddling on the surfboard. The adventure-seeking surfers look for many and large waves, which the Aborigines call Bombies , because they can arrive with different wave heights, which offer corresponding surfing fun.

Others

Alcoa of Australia operates the coal-fired power station Anglesea and an open pit coal mine near the city. It is located next to the Anglesea Heath, a landscape that is important because of its biological diversity and is under national conservation .

In February 1983, one of Australia's most devastating bushfires , the Ash Wednesday Fires , reached the urban area and destroyed numerous houses.
