Coordinates: 35 ° 43 '  S , 143 ° 55'  O Shire of Gannawarra is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 3735.1 km² and has about 10,500 inhabitants.

Gannawarra is located on the northern border of Victoria about 280 km northwest of the capital Melbourne and includes the following villages: Benjeroop, Cohuna, Kerang , Koondrook, Lalbert, Murrabit, Leitchville, Macorna and Quambatook. The seat of the City Council is in Kerang in the center of the LGA, where about 3600 inhabitants live.

Gannawarra is an agricultural and forestry shaped Shire in the region around Loddon River and Murray River . The Gunbower State Forest with its stock of red eucalyptus (River Red Gum) has been the basis of the wood and furniture industry in Koondrook for over 100 years. The area around Lalbert and Quambatook is known for growing grain, and Leitchville has a major dairy production center in Victoria. Cohuna is also known throughout Australia as a center for the manufacture of irrigation technology.

In terms of tourism, the area is particularly interesting for anglers and water sports enthusiasts. In addition to the Murray and Loddon rivers, numerous lakes (e.g. Lake Charm and Kangaroo Lake) are among the tourist destinations. Murrabit also has one of the largest country markets in Victoria, which is known beyond the region. Once a month, all kinds of everyday goods are offered for sale at around 300 stalls.

The 264 km² Gunbower Island between the Murray River and Gunbower Creek is the largest inland island in Australia. It stretches for almost 50 km and the swamp and woodland is best known for the more than 200 species of birds that live there. The ibis is also the heraldic bird of the Gannawarra Shires.

administration

The Gannawarra Shire Council has seven members who are elected by the residents of the five wards. One Councilor each comes from the districts of Avoca, Bannagher and Murray, and two each from Wandella and Yarran. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
