Alpine is located in northeast Victoria about 350 km northeast of the capital Melbourne and includes the following localities: Myrtleford , Mount Buffalo, Bright , Mount Beauty , Harrietville, Falls Creek and Hotham Heights. The City Council is located in the center of the LGA in Bright, a small town with around 2,300 inhabitants.
The area was explored by the Europeans as early as 1824, but was only interesting for settlers in the gold rush times in the mid-19th century because of its high mountain location. Alpine is located in the midst of the highest mountains in Victoria, Mount Buffalo (1723 m) in the west of the Shire, Mount Hotham (1861 m) in the south and Mount Feathertop (1922 m) and Mount Bogong (1986 m) in the west.
Parts of the Alpine National Park , the largest national park in Victoria, as well as the Mount Buffalo National Park are located in Alpine Shire and accordingly mountain hiking, mountaineering, white water rafting and, in winter, skiing are tourist attractions in the region. Mount Hotham is the highest ski area in Australia with lift stations up to 1845 m. Bright is also a popular paragliding center.
administration
The Alpine Shire Council has seven members who are elected by LGA residents. Alpine Shire is not divided into districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
