Coordinates: 37 ° 20 ′  S , 144 ° 8 ′  E Hepburn Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 1473.0 km² and has about 15,000 inhabitants.

Hepburn is located in the center of Victoria about 110 km northwest of the capital Melbourne and includes the following towns: Allendale, Broomfield, Bullarto, Campbelltown, Clunes, Creswick , Daylesford, Dean, Eganstown, Hepburn Springs, Kingston, Leonards Hill, Lyonville, Musk, Newlyn, Rocklyn, Smeaton and Trentham. The seat of the City Council is in Daylesford in the eastern half of the LGA with about 2500 inhabitants.

In the 1830s, the first isolated sheep farmers settled in the region. The gold rush began in Victoria on July 7, 1851, when the state's first official gold discovery was announced near Clunes. The area prospered during the gold rush , but went back down just as quickly after it ended. In the ten years up to 1861 , the number of inhabitants in Creswick rose to 25,000 to 50,000 and then fell back below 5,000.

Creswick was also the site of the largest mine disaster in Australian history in 1882. When the Australia No 2 mine was flooded , 22 gold diggers drowned.

In addition to agriculture, forestry also shapes the region. In the eucalyptus forests around Trentham, several thousand tons of wood were felled each year. The School of Forestry was founded in Creswick in 1910 and is now a Chair of Forest and Ecological Sciences at the University of Melbourne .

Daylesford and Hepburn Springs are also known as " Spa Town". There is the highest density of medicinal springs in all of Australia. Over 60 of them are in the region. Accordingly, there are many spas and health and wellness facilities as well as accommodation for over 3500 visitors.

The Clunes area is also very popular as a filming location. Several Australian film and television productions originate from here, including scenes for the internationally successful film Mad Max .

administration

The Hepburn Shire Council has five members who are elected by residents of the five wards. These counties are Birch, Cameron, Coliban, Creswick, and Holcombe. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
