Coordinates: 38 ° 22 ′ S , 142 ° 14 ′ E Moyne Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 5481.7 km² and has about 16,500 inhabitants.
Moyne is located on the south coast of Victoria about 290 km west of the capital Melbourne and encloses the LGA of the coastal town of Warrnambool . The following towns are in the Shire: Macarthur, Hawkesdale, Orford, Woolsthorpe, Winslow, Codrington, Yambuk, Chatsworth, Woorndoo, Caramut, Hexham, Mortlake, Ellerslie, Port Fairy , Koroit, Killarney, Illowa, Framlingham , Panmure, Nullawarre and Peterborough . The seat of the City Council is in the coastal town of Port Fairy with about 3000 inhabitants.
The area lives mainly from agriculture and fishing. Port Fairy, formerly a stronghold of whale and seal fishing, still has a large fishing fleet today. Wool and lamb are some of the Shire's main agricultural products. In Koroit is also the largest milk processing company in Australia in terms of milk volume and the catchment area extends beyond western Victoria to the neighboring state of South Australia .
The area around the volcanic hill Tower Hill near the second largest village Koroit was declared Victoria's first national park in 1892. The tourist attraction is the south coast, which is part of the Shipwreck Coast . Numerous ships crashed on the rugged coastal cliffs in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Historic Shipwreck Trail begins in Port Fairy .

The Moyne Shire Council has ten members who are elected by the residents of the five ridings. Each of the five boroughs of Eumeralla-Hawkesdale, Mortlake, Koroit, Port Fairy and Hopkins-Childers has two councilors. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
