Coordinates: 35 ° 58 ′  S , 145 ° 39 ′  E Moira Shire is a Local Government Area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 4046.6 km² and has about 29,000 inhabitants.

Moira is located about 250 km north of the capital Melbourne south of the Murray River , which forms the border with New South Wales , and includes the following towns: Cobram, Nathalia, Numurkah, Yarrawonga, Bearii, Barmah, Bundalong, Katamatite, Katunga, Koonoomoo, Lake Rowan, Picola, St James, Strathmerton, Tungamah, Waaia, Wilby, Wunghnu and Yarroweyah. The Shire Council is located in Cobram on the Murray River.

The Shire is an agricultural area. The first settlements arose in the second half of the 19th century on both sides of the Murray River, when it was an important transport route before the arrival of the railroad. Cobram is connected to Barooga in New South Wales by a bridge. In 1939 a navigable dam was built between Yarrawonga and Mulwala. He dams Lake Mulwala , which ensures the uniform water supply and irrigation of the region. The 488 m long bridge over the lake is a curiosity: the insufficiently coordinated construction work meant that a curve and a slope had to be built in the middle in order to match the two sections. The lake and river are also popular fishing and water sports areas.

The industry in Moira Shire is mainly part of the food sector, so there is a larger subsidiary of Mondelēz International in addition to dairy and fruit and vegetable processing companies in Strathmerton . The region also benefits from its proximity to the larger settlements in Shepparton , Albury / Wodonga and Echuca / Moama.

administration

The Moira Shire Council has nine members elected by residents of the three wards. Three councilors each from the East, Central and West districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
