Coordinates: 37 ° 57 ' S , 145 ° 0' O Bayside City is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . Bayside is part of the metropolis Melbourne , the capital of Victoria. The area is 37.2 km² and has about 97,000 inhabitants.
Located at the far end of Port Phillip Bay, southeast of Port Phillip , 12 to 14 miles from the city center, Bayside contains nine neighborhoods: Beaumaris , Black Rock , Brighton , Brighton East, Cheltenham, Hampton, Hampton East, Highett and Sandringham. The seat of the City Council is in Sandringham, which is also the terminus of the Sandringham Railway Line via Hampton, Brighton to South Yarra towards the center.
The first urban area settlement was a farm in Brighton in 1841. The area was initially used for agriculture, but due to the 17 km long sandy beach, it soon developed into a recreational area for the Melbourne residents and the second home of the wealthier capital city dwellers.
Two-thirds of Bayside's employees work in the Central Business District in Melbourne city center. Trade and services dominate the area's economy with only a small part of manufacturing.
A special attraction of Brighton beach are the bathing boxes, 82 brightly painted wooden huts (about 2 m × 2.5 m floor area) along the beach.
administration
The Bayside City Council has nine members who are elected by the residents of the nine wards. These nine constituencies (Abbott, Charman, Clayton, Dendy, Ebden, Mair, Moysey, Smith and Were) are independent of the districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
