Coordinates: 37 ° 14 ′  S , 144 ° 27 ′  E The Macedon Ranges Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 1748 km² and has about 46,000 inhabitants.

The Shire is located in the center of Victoria and borders the capital Melbourne to the south . The area includes the following major towns: Gisborne, Kyneton, Lancefield , Macedon, Malmsbury, Mount Macedon, Riddells Creek, New Gisborne, Romsey and Woodend . The City Council is located in Kyneton in the west of the LGA.

The area around the 1013 m high Mount Macedon was settled as early as the 1830s. Sheep farmers in particular settled here. During the gold rush period, it was a transit area between the capital Melbourne and the western gold fields around Bendigo and Castlemaine . In the 20th century, city dwellers were drawn to the region on Melbourne's doorstep because of the cooler mountain climate. Even today, the Shire is primarily geared towards tourism.

Camels Hump, one of the highest peaks in the Macedon Ranges, is a popular destination for sport climbers. Another popular tourist destination is Hanging Rock near Woodend, an interesting rock formation made of rare volcanic rock with high-altitude hiking trails.

In Lancefield in the east of the Shire there is a marker of the geographic center of the state of Victoria.

administration

The Macedon Ranges Shire Council has nine members who are elected by the residents of the three wards. Each of these three districts - East, West, and South - has three Councilors. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
