Coordinates: 38 ° 20 ′  S , 141 ° 36 ′  E Glenelg Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 6216.6 km² and has about 20,000 inhabitants.

Glenelg is located in the extreme southwest of Victoria about 360 km west of the capital Melbourne on the border with South Australia and includes the following towns: Casterton, Brimboal, Henty, Digby, Hotspur, Wallacedale, Condah, Nelson, Dartmoor, Merino, Heywood, Narrawongun and Portland . The City Council is based in the coastal city of Portland , which has a population of approximately 10,100.

Portland is the oldest settlement in Victoria. The bay was discovered as early as 1800 and at the end of 1834 the sheep farmer Edward Henty settled on Portland Bay. He was the first settler to gain a permanent foothold in Australia and he founded the successful Australian sheep wool industry.

Portland is the only natural deep sea port between the south coast metropolises Melbourne and Adelaide , from which the place also benefited in the early years, until it was overtaken by Port Phillip with the settlements of Melbourne and Geelong. Only in the 1980s did the port regain importance due to a large aluminum smelter. Since 1996, the Port of Portland has been the first privatized port facility in Australia.

The Shire has a diverse landscape: from the hilly pastureland in the north to the river landscape on the Glenelg River to the Discovery Coast in the south. Cape Nelson and Cape Bridgewater in particular, southwest of Portland, are also interesting for tourists. A sea lion colony and blue whales that can be observed from the coast are among the attractions.

The Kelpie , an Australian breed of dog, comes from Warrock Station near Casterton in the north of the Glenelg Shire .

administration

The Glenelg Shire Council has nine members who are elected by the residents of the nine ridings. These nine counties are Cobboboonee, Dutton, Fawthrop, Gilmore, Grant, Henty, Mitchell, and Mt Clay. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
