Today's CBD was the first settlement area on the south coast of Australia in 1835 and developed into a city within just twelve years. The districts
On the eastern border of the CBD, on Spring Street, is Parliament House , the seat of the Parliament of Victoria. The highest court, the Supreme Court of Victoria, can also be found in the city center.
To the east of the city center south of the Yarra River is the Melbourne Botanical Garden, considered to be the most beautiful in Australia and one of the most beautiful in the world. On 38 hectares, 50,000 plant and 10,000 animal species can be seen in the Royal Botanic Gardens .
Southbank is located south of the center between the south bank of the Yarra River and Port Phillip City . Here are some of the tallest buildings in the city, including the 297 m high Eureka Tower or the 205 m high Freshwater Place. Furthermore, the cultural center of Melbourne is located here around the Arts Center with theaters, concert halls, the National Gallery and the Victorian College of the Arts.
The Carlton Gardens in the district of the same name with the Royal Exhibition Building are a UNESCO World Heritage Site . There is also the Melbourne Museum , the largest museum in the southern hemisphere. Melbourne General Cemetery is located in Carlton North. This main cemetery, which has been in use since 1853, is home to numerous graves of famous figures from Australian history, including three Prime Ministers and famous explorers Burke and Wills . In neighboring Princes Park there is a 35,000-seat stadium, where the Victorian Football League usually plays the final of the football season at national level.
The City of Melbourne is home to many major sports venues, the most important of which are in the Olympic Park, Melbourne Park and Yarra Park areas in East Melbourne. The largest stadium in the city is the Melbourne Cricket Ground , which holds 100,000 spectators and was the main stadium for the Olympic Games as early as 1956. The Rod Laver Arena and the Hisense Arena with 15,000 and 10,000 seats respectively are the main stadiums of the Australian Open , one of the four tennis grand slam tournaments.
The Etihad Stadium in Docklands is the second largest stadium with over 56,000 spectators. Originally built for Australian Football , it has also been the home of Melbourne Victory since 2007 . That year they became Australian soccer champions and moved from the Olympic Park Stadium due to increased audience interest.
To the northeast, in the Parkville neighborhood, is the main campus of the University of Melbourne , Victoria's oldest university, and the Royal Melbourne Hospital , one of Australia's leading state hospitals. In addition, the Royal Park, the largest inner-city park with 181 hectares, is located in the district, as is Melbourne Zoo , the oldest zoological garden in Australia.
To the far northwest of the City is Flemington Racecourse , a two mile (3,200 m) long horse racing circuit. In addition to numerous important races, the Melbourne Cup takes place here on the first Tuesday in November . The day is an official holiday in Victoria and the race is the largest and most important in Australia and one of the most prestigious two-mile races in the world.
Docklands
The Docklands on the Yarra River are the former harbor area of Melbourne. The port has become too small due to the modern container ships and therefore moved on towards the mouth of the river to West Melbourne. The old harbor buildings have been converted into office buildings and today the Docklands are a business hub for the city.
The Docklands have a special status within the City of Melbourne as they are administered by the Docklands Authority and their residents do not take part in City Council elections.
administration
Melbourne City Council has nine members who are elected by the City's residents. Unlike the other LGAs in Melbourne, Melbourne City is not divided into districts (wards). The Lord Mayor (Lord Mayor) of the Council is also recruited from among the Councilor. The Lord Mayor of the City is at the same time the representative of the entire city and the representative at important meetings in state, government and economic affairs.
