South Yarra is a district of the Australian metropolis Melbourne . It is located about 4 km east of the city center. The name refers to the location of the district south of the Yarra River .

Around 1835, the first Europeans settled in the surrounding area during the founding of Melbourne. A post office was opened in 1854.

Together with neighboring Toorak, South Yarra is one of the wealthiest areas of Melbourne. The prices of real estate are among the highest of all Melbourne.

To the west of South Yarra is Fawkner Park , a recreation park with various sports facilities, as well as part of the Royal Botanic Gardens .
