Carlton is a neighborhood in the center of Melbourne . It is located approx. 2 km north of the city center and had a population of 12,050 in 2006, making it one of the most populous parts of the city. The name is likely derived from Carlton House in London .
Carlton is home to Carlton Gardens , a park with the Royal Exhibition Building , which has the status of a World Heritage Site . Lygon Street , in particular, is known for its Italian restaurants and cafes and is also known as Melbourne's "Little Italy".
