Carlton

Carlton is a neighborhood in the center of Melbourne . It is located approx. 2 km north of the city center and had a population of 12,050 in 2006, making it one of the most populous parts of the city. The name is likely derived from Carlton House in London .

Carlton is home to Carlton Gardens , a park with the Royal Exhibition Building , which has the status of a World Heritage Site . Lygon Street , in particular, is known for its Italian restaurants and cafes and is also known as Melbourne's "Little Italy".

Carlton is also home to many students due to its proximity to two of Melbourne's largest universities, the University of Melbourne and the RMIT .
