The University of Melbourne ( English University of Melbourne ) is a state university in the Australian city ​​of Melbourne and with around 40,000 students after Monash University, the second largest university in the Australian state of Victoria . It was founded in 1853, making it the oldest university in the state of Victoria and the second oldest in Australia.

The university is a member of the Group of Eight , an Australian higher education association that includes the country's eight leading universities. According to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2015/2016 , it is the best university in Oceania with 33rd place in the world .

In some departments the university is one of the world's leading institutions. In the 2014 QS World University Ranking, the university was in 2nd place worldwide in the field of education , 8th place in Accounting & Finance, 8th place in law and 10th place in psychology . It ranks 12th in the medical field and currently 15th in computer science and business informatics.

The university is a member of the university networks Universitas 21 and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) .
