The University of Canberra (UC) is a public university in the Australian capital of Canberra .
history
The UC was founded in 1967 as the Canberra College of Advanced Education (CCAE) . The foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister John Gorton on October 28, 1968; this event is still celebrated today as Stone Day . In 1990, CCAE was granted university status and renamed the University of Canberra.
The main campus is in the suburb of Bruce, about 8 km northwest of Canberra . From 2002 to 2005 there was a second campus in Brisbane, Queensland.
From 2000 to 2006, the Metal for the Brain Festival took place in the cafeteria . Today the Stonefest , one of the most popular music festivals in Australia, takes place on the grounds of the UC at the end of October .
University
There are just over 10,000 students enrolled. The 1.2 km² campus area with 23 buildings is located in the Bruce district north of the city center. In contrast to the Australian National University , also based in Canberra, the UC is more focused on practical training than research.
