The Stonefest (formerly called Stone Day ) is a music festival in the Australian capital Canberra . It takes place at the end of October (in the Australian spring) on the grounds of the University of Canberra . It is the largest music festival in the city and is one of the most popular in the country.

The former name of the festival goes back to the laying of the foundation stone of the university by Prime Minister John Gorton on October 28, 1968. Exactly four years later, Stone Day took place for the first time. By 1976, the various festivities (of which the music festival forms only a part) had spread over a week, which is why they were called Stoneweek. In the 1980s and 1990s, the initially student pleasure turned into an event for everyone. In 2000 the name was changed to Stonefest.

In addition to numerous local bands that were successful in Australia, internationally known formations such as The Von Bondies , Groove Armada , Electric Six and The Living End have also appeared in recent years .
