The Living End is an Australian rock band that has its origins in rockabilly and punkabilly . To date she has released five studio albums in Australia, two of which were number 1 on the Australian ARIA charts . The band has also gained prominence in the United States , Japan and Europe.

history

Beginnings

The Living End was founded in 1994 after singer and guitarist Chris Cheney and bassist Scott Owen were introduced by their older siblings at Wheelers Hill Secondary College in Melbourne . Cheney was obsessed with the 80s rockabilly group Stray Cats . Owen decided to learn the double bass instead of the piano and they started to play gigs under the name "Runaway Boys" like the Stray Cats album of the same name. The band had a variety of drummers until they settled on Joe Piripitzi.

The Living End had their first big hit in 1995 after sending a t-shirt and demo tape to Billie Joe Armstrong (whose label Adeline Records they have been with since 2006). They got a seat as the opening act on the next Green Day tour through Australia. After the tour, the band went to the studio. There they produced their debut EP Hellbound , which received moderate support from radio stations.

In November 1995 the band went back to the studio. This time they produced their second EP It's for Your Own Good , which they released seven months later. The song From Here On In was played by many radio stations. Shortly after the release of the second EP, drummer Joe Piritzi left the band and was replaced by Travis Dempsey, who soon played with the band at major festivals such as Pushover or Falls Festival. After touring Australia for a year, the band decided to go back to the studio to play something new on their now very popular shows. The result was the double single Prisoner of Society / Second Solution . The Living End took the inspiration for their new songs from a younger Australian punk band known as "Filling The Void".

breakthrough

Prisoner of Society quickly became a national hit. The band signed a record deal with the company "Modular Recordings" to release their debut album, which bears the band name. Single and album conquered the Australian charts for months. The Living End is the best-selling rock album in Australian music history and has gone five platinum to date. They came to Germany for the first time in December 1998 through an invitation from the band Die Toten Hosen , and in 1999 they played again in Europe and North America with the Warped Tour .

The album Roll On , which was released in 2000, was a little more creative, but it did not match the success of the first album. Cheney later stated that he wanted to prove to critics that The Living End wasn't just defined by its hit Prisoner of Society . The album demonstrated this by combining other styles with their previous fast-paced rockabilly music. The Living End was compared to The Clash for the album by some critics , who had their breakthrough with London Calling . In the course of the album release, they played again at major festivals in Europe and North America. In the fall of the same year, Chris Cheney had a car accident on the Great Ocean Road , causing the band to take a year off. When the accident happened, he was on his way to meet a friend who plays in the Australian band Bodyjar .

In 2003, after Chris' condition improved, Andy Strachan took over as drummer when Travis Dempsey found the long tours too tiring. In this new formation, The Living End released the singles One Said To The Other and Who's Gonna Save Us? . This was followed by a big tour and the release of their third studio album, MODERN ARTillery.

Cheney in 2004

At the end of 2004 the band released a singles collection on DVD, which contains all of their music videos, excerpts from various live performances, and extensive interviews.

Chris Cheney and Scott Owen received the "Jack Award" in 2004 and 2005 in the categories of best guitarist and best bassist.

State of Emergency

The fourth Living End album is called State of Emergency . It was recorded in Byron Bay after the band played at the Splendor in the Grass festival. The recordings were made in December 2005. The finished album was released on February 4, 2006 and immediately shot to number one in the "ARIA Albums Charts".

The single What's on Your Radio? was released on November 20, 2005 and reached number 9 on the ARIA singles chart. The second single Wake Up was released on November 20, 2005 and came in at number five. The third single from the album, Long Live the Weekend , was released on May 20, 2006. In 2006, The Living End also won four "Jack Awards". The album was released in the US on July 11, 2006. The album has been available in Germany since September 2007.

On July 22, 2008, the fifth studio album White Noise was released in Australia and a few days later in Japan. It immediately took second place in the official Australian album charts, and in November it received the ARIA Award for the best rock album of the year. As part of the release of the album, the band got more involved in Europe again in 2009: After a first tour in April through the European capitals, they played at various open airs in the summer, including the Southside Festival , the Hurricane Festival and the Reading Festival in England . Another tour is scheduled for November.

Collaborations

The Living End have made many recordings with many popular bands and artists. In 2005, The Living End recorded a version of Ashton, Gardner & Dyke 's "Resurrection Shuffle" with Jimmy Barnes for his duo album "Double Happiness". The Living End can also be heard on the album "Barricades & Brickwalls" by Australian country and western musician Kasey Chambers . They also contributed to the album "Crossfire". Front man and guitarist Chris Cheney was also a member of the "super group" "The Wrights", who released a cover of Stevie Wright 's song "Evie Parts 1, 2 & 3" after they did "Evie part 1" on the 2004 Australian Music Industry's "ARIA Awards" played. Cheney also played guitar and contributed to vocals on "Private School Kid" on Sarah McLeod 's (formerly "The Superjesus") debut solo album .
