The Macquarie University is a university in the north of Sydney , Australia .

Founded in 1964, the university was named after Governor Lachlan Macquarie , the first governor of New South Wales . Macquarie also laid the foundation stone for the Macquarie Lighthouse, a lighthouse for supply ships that headed for Sydney Bay. The Campus North Ryde is located about half an hour from the city center. On the 135 hectare site there is also a sculpture park, a golf driving range, two hotels and museums. The Macquarie University Research Park , where research departments from companies such as Siemens , Cisco Systems and Nortel Networks are located, was also built on campus .

In 2010, 31,286 students were enrolled in three departments (colleges) , which are divided into nine faculties (divisions) . With a share of 35 percent of all students, the Division of Economic and Financial Studies is by far the most important faculty. The MBA offered by the Macquarie Graduate School of Management is also particularly renowned . In 2004 the program was ranked 50th in The Economist Intelligence Unit 's worldwide MBA ranking, and even 1st in the Asia-Pacific ranking . The smallest program at Macquarie University is the Master in Politics and Public Policy (MPP).

52 percent of the students were not born in Australia, 29 percent are foreign nationals, of which more than half are from China and Hong Kong.
