Benjamim de Araújo e Côrte-Real (* 1961 ) is an East Timorese university professor and linguist.

Career

Côrte-Real attended the Colégio de São José from August 1979 to July 1984 and studied from August 1985 at the Christian University Satya Wacana ( Indonesian Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana , UKSW) in Salatiga on Java . In his dissertation he compared the phonology of English with the language of his homeland, Tetum .

Back in East Timor, he taught English at the Universitas Timor Timur (UNTIM) until he went to Australia in July 1992 to do his Masters in Linguistics. This was followed by a PhD in Linguistics from Macquarie University . His dissertation from 1998 was entitled " Mambai and its verbal art genres - A cultural reflection of Suro - Ainaro , East Timor". After a brief return to UNTIM, Côrte-Real returned to Macquarie University in March 1999 as a research fellow.

His final homecoming was delayed by the crisis in East Timor in 1999 , which would eventually lead the country towards independence. While the United Nations was still in the interim administration for East Timor , he returned to the state capital Dili in March 2000 . In November he became a member of the East Timorese National Institute for Linguistics (Instituto Nacional de Linguística INL) of the Universidade Nasionál Timór Lorosa'e (UNTL), the former UNTIM. In July 2001 Côrte-Real was appointed director of the institute and on 19 September 2001 by the President of East Timor as the new rector of the university. On December 1, 2010, Côrte-Real was replaced by Aurélio Guterres as rector, but he retained the office of director of the institute.

From May 17, 2005 to 2012, Côrte-Real was a member of the East Timor Council of State .

From January 2003 to 2014 Côrte-Real was President of the National Executive Council of the Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste (CVTL), the East Timorese Red Cross. From 2002 to 2005 he was assistant to the vice-president of the Fédération Internationale de Langues et Littératures Modernes (FILIM).
