The Dutch plantation owner Elise Yohana Le Jolle had been preaching the Gospel in Salatiga since 1849. She asked the Dutch mission congregation Ermelo and the Neukirchen Mission for co-workers for this mission. In 1888 both mission societies founded the common union of the missionaries of the Salatiga Mission. In 1891 there were 606 baptized Christians there. In 1902 a polyclinic was set up in Salatiga, from 1906 schools were built and teachers' seminars founded. In 1949 part of the former Salatiga congregations was merged into the Christian Church of North Central Java (GKJTU). In 2018, the Neukirchen Mission will support this church and its schools with staff and finances.
On July 1, 1917, Salatiga received the status of a municipality ( staad gemeente ) as part of the colony of the Dutch East Indies and then in 1929 the town charter ( Stadsgemeente Salatiga ).
