Maria Madalena Fernandes Melo Hanjam Costa Soares is an East Timorese politician .

From 2007 to 2012 she was Deputy Minister for Health of East Timor under Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão . After leaving politics after the new government took office, Hanjam devoted herself to combating the consequences of malnutrition, which are widespread in East Timor.

Together with Finance Minister Emília Pires , the Comissão Anti-Corrupção (CAC) accused Hanjam of corruption. Accordingly, Mac's Metalcraft Pty Ltd. , which belongs to Pires' husband, delivered various furnishings to the Hospital Nacional Guido Valadares . The instruction to purchase $ 800,000 is said to have been made by Pires. On December 20, 2016, Hanjam was sentenced to four years in prison. She announced that she would appeal the judgment. They only carried out instructions from Pires and Gusmão.

Hanjam has been President of the Executive Council of the Red Cross East Timor since August 2018 .
