João Soares Martins

João Soares Martins is an East Timorese doctor and politician. He is a doctor of medicine and a professor at Universidade Nasionál Timór Lorosa'e (UNTL). He is a member of the Partido Democrático (PD) . Martins has been a member of the East Timorese Medical Association since 2001.

Career

From 1987 to 1994 Martins completed a medical degree at Udayana University on the Indonesian island of Bali . Between 1998 and 2001 he studied public health at the University of Otago in Dunedin ( New Zealand ) and received a master's degree. Martins received his doctorate after studying at the University of New South Wales between 2006 and 2010 in Sydney ( Australia ).

In the Second Interim Government of East Timor , during the United Nations Interim Administration for East Timor (UNTAET), Martins was Deputy Minister of Health from September 20, 2001 to May 19, 2002. Martins then became dean of the medical faculty of the UNTL.
