The University of New South Wales ( UNSW ; German " University of New South Wales " ) is a university that is located in the Australian city of Sydney . It was founded in 1949 and (as of 2014) is attended by around 40,000 students. The main campus is located in the eastern part of the city in the Kensington district .
Today, UNSW is one of Australia's most respected teaching and research institutions and is part of the Group of Eight , an association of the eight leading Australian universities. It enjoys a particularly good reputation in engineering disciplines. According to the Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) , UNSW is one of the world's 20 best universities in engineering. The university-based Australian School of Business has an MBA program in 39th place. In 2006, the university as a whole was ranked 41st by THES and 64th by Newsweek worldwide.
