He later settled in Australia , where he married Esther Charlotte Bradley (1834-1856) on May 3, 1855 . The marriage resulted in son Charles. As a result of his marriage, which meant a social appreciation, he was appointed Commissioner of crown lands of Goulburn (near Canberra ) in May 1855 and was president of the Goulburn School of Art .

After his return to England in 1858 he began to work as a writer and published a number of books from 1867. In the summer of 1873 Anna Kingsford read one of his works and began an exchange of letters with Maitland which led to a first meeting of the two in February 1874. A friendship began that lasted until Kingsford's death in 1888.

Together they joined the London Lodge and thus the Theosophical Society in September 1882 . On January 7, 1883, he was elected Vice President of the London Lodge, while Kingsford took over the presidency. When Kingsford was voted out of office on April 6, 1884, Maitland also lost his vice-presidential post. Then they founded the Hermetic Society together on May 9, 1884 , which was close to Theosophy , but was independent of the Theosophical Society. After Kingsford's death in 1888, he founded the Esoteric Christian Union in 1891 .
