The Federation University Australia is a university in Ballarat , in the Australian state of Victoria .

It was created in 2013 through the merger of the University of Ballarat with the Gippsland Campus of Monash University . The University of Ballarat was founded in 1870 as the "School of Mines Ballarat (SMB)" for gold miners. In 1994 she was named University of Ballarat. In 1998 it traded with the Ballarat School for Mining and Industry with a location in Ararat and the Wimmera Institute, a further education institution, with a location in Stawell. The university is based on the Mt Helen Campus in Mount Helen, the historic district of Ballarat, as well as in Horsham , Stawell and Ararat .

Around 22,000 students study at the University of Ballarat, with around 17,000 students enrolled in tertiary programs - "Technical and Further Education (TAFE)".
