Universidade Nasionál Timór Lorosa'e

The Universidade Nasionál Timór Lorosa'e ( UNTL, National University of Timor-Leste ; Portuguese : Universidade Nacional de Timor Lorosa'e ) in Dili is the main center for higher education in East Timor . It was founded on November 15, 2000.

history

In the Portuguese colonial period , only a few Timorese were able to complete a higher education, mostly in Portugal. It was not until 1986 that the Universitas Timor Timur (UnTim) was founded as the first university in East Timor by Governor Mário Carrascalão during the Indonesian occupation . The private institution was used to train middle-level officials, agricultural technicians and teachers in the upper schools. There were no courses in architecture, law or medicine. International contacts were rigorously monitored. In 1998/99 the number of students exceeded 4000. 73 professors taught. In April 1999, however, the university was closed by the Indonesian authorities as a result of rallies for East Timor's independence from Indonesia.

In September 1999, before the UN took control of the country, Indonesian soldiers and pro-Indonesian militias destroyed its infrastructure. 95 percent of the educational institutions were destroyed. This also affected the entire university and its equipment.

Despite the low budget of the UNTAET , with the help of the professors and students of the old university and the polytechnic school, the UNTL was able to conduct its teaching with 5000 students in the buildings of the grammar school Dr. António de Carvalho , the Technical School Dr. Silva Cunha , the Canto Resende School and later, in the Polytechnic School in Hera and the old UnTim buildings. At first the most basic things were missing, even furniture. Many of the students who had previously pursued higher education now took up posts in the administration of the now independent East Timor. The first rector was Armindo Maia , who was already vice rector for academic affairs in the previous institution. Vice-Rector for Student Affairs was Natalino Monteiro , commander of the pro-Indonesian militia Dadarus Merah Putih DMP ( Red White Tornado ).

From March 24th to April 14th, 2020 the UNTL introduced correspondence courses and canceled all classroom courses as a preventive measure against the COVID-19 pandemic . Until then, East Timor had no registered case of infection.

Today's university

There are currently seven faculties. Law, agriculture, political science, economics, teaching, engineering and since 2017 fishing and marine research. In July 2001 the National Center for Scientific Research ( Centro Nacional de Investigação Científica ) and the National Institute for Linguistics ( Instituto Nacional de Linguística ) were founded. Here Tetum , one of the two official languages, is to be promoted through initiatives.

The establishment of a law faculty is currently being prepared with the help of Portuguese lawyers. Courses in medicine, communication, fisheries, architecture, physics, chemistry and Timor studies are also planned. Usually the classes are held in Portuguese or, if there is no support from lusophone countries , in Bahasa Indonesia .

In the Liceu Dr. Francisco Machado is home to the Faculty of Education, Art and Humanism.

The university is a member of the Associação das Universidades de Língua Portuguesa (AULP).
