Maria Ângela Guterres Viegas Carrascalão (born April 10, 1951 in Portuguese Timor ) is a journalist, author, university lecturer and politician from East Timor . She is a member of the União Democrática Timorense (UDT).

family

Ângela is the daughter of Manuel Viegas Carrascalão , a Portuguese exile who married a Timoresin. The marriage had 13 children, several of whom held high political positions.

Career

Carrascalão attended the Liceu Dr. Francisco Machado . From 1978 to 1981 she worked for the Portuguese news agencies Notícias de Portugal (NP), Agência Noticiosa Portuguesa (ANOP) and Lusa as well as for the television station Sociedade Independente de Comunicação (SIC) and the magazine Jornal Expresso . Then she moved to the Portuguese newspaper Público until 2002 .

In 2005, Carrascalão was the director of the Lia Foun newspaper in East Timor . In 2006/2007 she worked as a documentary and interpreter for the Reception, Truth and Reconciliation Commission of East Timor (CAVR) and from 2006 to 2008 as a correspondent for the Australian radio SBS .

In 2007, Carrascalão ran for the UDT in 9th place in the parliamentary elections . The party did not manage to win a seat. From 2008 to 2009 she was Head of the Cabinet of the State Secretary for Defense of the IV East Timor Government .

From 2005 to 2010 Carrascalão studied law at the Universidade Nasionál Timór Lorosa'e (UNTL) and graduated with a doctorate. Since January 2011 she has been a lecturer and later also dean of the Law Faculty at UNTL. In 2013 she was also appointed a member of the Conselho de Opinião des Radio-Televisão Timor Leste for four years .

On October 13, 2017 Ângela Carrascalão was of President Francisco Guterres to the Minister of Justice of the VII. Government appointed and sworn in on 17 October. Her term of office as minister ended when the Eighth Government of East Timor took office on June 22, 2018.

Carrascalão speaks Tetum , Portuguese , English and French . In addition to the East Timorese citizenship, she also has Portuguese.
