history

Liceu Dr. Francisco Machado - state before the Second War
The destroyed building in October 1999

The school was named after Francisco Vieira Machado , the then Portuguese Colonial Minister (1936–1944), who was responsible for establishing the school for native Timorese. The building, which was built between 1922 and 1924, originally housed the Escola Municipal de Díli . It was destroyed in World War II. After the building was restored, the school reopened as a secondary school in 1952 and expanded between 1955 and 1956 according to plans by Eurico Pinto Lopes . For the first time, Timorese were also able to go to secondary school. More precisely, this school was primarily available to mestizos , despite a legal prohibition of discrimination. In 1964, only ten Timorese graduated from the school. The later independence fighter Nicolau dos Reis Lobato was a graduate . The Minister for Social Solidarity Maria Domingas Alves also went to school here.

In 1961 the school building was enlarged due to the increased number of students. However, the plans of Eurico Pinto Lopes and António Sousa Mendes have not been fully implemented. Only the wing on Avenida Cidade de Lisboa was built. The original building of the community school was built in the style of the Goa colony . It had an arcade gallery protected by a balustrade . The pillars were connected by round arches. The staircase was pyramid-shaped and led to the main entrance, crowned by a striking ornamental pediment. The walls were whitewashed, the windows, apart from those facing the inner gallery, frameless. The decorations disappeared after the reconstruction.

After the Indonesian occupation, the school was stopped and the building was destroyed by the pro-Indonesian militia Aitarak during the crisis in East Timor in 1999 . The Lisbon City Council funded the reconstruction of the Liceu Dr. Francisco Machado 2001. The exterior view was restored based on the original, but the interior was modernized for today's use as part of the UNTL. Previously, the building was briefly used as a government office.

Opposite is another historical building, the former administration building of the Sociedade Agrícola Pátria e Trabalho Lda. (SAPT).
