Ivo Jorge Valente (born October 17, 1969 in Dili , Portuguese Timor ) is a politician and lawyer from East Timor . He belongs to the Congresso Nacional da Reconstrução Timorense (CNRT) party. From 2015 to 2017 he was Justice Minister East Timor .

Career

In 1996 Valente completed a law degree at Diponegoro University (UNDIP) in Semarang, Indonesia . From 2002 to 2006 courses in human rights, English, Portuguese and training to become a public prosecutor, judge and public defense lawyer followed.

From 1997 to 1999, Valente was an official in the legal department of the Indonesian district government of Dili . As a part-time teacher for Indonesian law, he also worked from 1997 to 1998 at the Faculty of Government and Political Science at the Universitas Timor Timur . From 1999 to 2001, Valente worked as an administrative officer in the government department in Malang, Indonesia . This was followed by a job as a site manager for a regional housing company. In 2002 Valente returned to East Timor and became a public prosecutor. He gave several courses at the Academy of the National Police of East Timor (PNTL). From 2003 to 2004 he worked as a legal assistant at the Serious Crimes Unit (SCU) of the East Timor’s Public Prosecutor's Office , then moved to the office of the Deputy Attorney General and then in 2005 as a legal advisor to the NGO Internacional Internews de Timor-Leste .

In 2006, Valente first became a consultant to the public prosecutor's office and on January 26th, he became Deputy Attorney General of East Timor, but resigned on June 2, 2009. In his view, the country’s politicians are interfering too much in the judiciary. Valente announced the move back in April after Paulo dos Remedios , a lawyer from Macau, was also appointed deputy attorney general. Remedios was a former advisor to President José Ramos-Horta . From 2008 to 2009 Valente was President of the Commission for the Control of PNTL in the State Secretariat for Security. From 2009 to 2010 he was a legal advisor in the Ministry of State Administration. In 2010, Valente was also a board member of the non-governmental organization Judicial System Monitoring Program (JSMP) and a member of Lalenokba Ema Hotu (LABEH), an anti-corruption non-governmental organization.

In 2010, Valente became Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Justice . From March 27, 2012, Valente was acting Minister of Justice after the incumbent Lúcia Lobato had to answer in court on various allegations. She was sentenced to five years in prison on June 8, 2012 for mismanagement. When the 5th government took office in 2012, Valente was once again given the post of Vice Minister for Justice under the new Justice Minister Dionísio Babo . In 2015, the government was reshuffled as a result of Valente being sworn in as the country's new justice minister. When the VII government took office on September 15, 2017, Valente lost his ministerial office as the CNRT went into opposition. He is now Deputy National Authorizing Officer (Adjuntu Ordenadór Nasionál) in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs .
