Domingos Maria Sarmento

Domingos Maria Sarmento (born May 7, 1955 in Letefoho , Portuguese Timor ) is a politician from East Timor . He is a member of FRETILIN .

Sarmento completed a law degree and later worked as a lawyer. In the interim government under the United Nations , which was set up on September 30, 2001, he was Vice Minister of Justice . When East Timor was granted independence on May 20, 2002, Sarmento kept his post and was promoted to Minister of Justice on March 6, 2003 under Prime Minister Marí Alkatiri . Sarmento also remained Minister of Justice under Prime Ministers José Ramos-Horta and Estanislau da Silva . After the parliamentary elections in 2007 , FRETILIN lost an absolute majority in the East Timorese national parliament and the government was taken over by the Aliança da Maioria Parliamentarians (AMP) coalition . Sarmento had been elected as a member of parliament and in this legislative term a member of the Commission on Constitutional Affairs, Justice, Public Administration, Local Jurisprudence and Government Legislation (Commission A). In the parliamentary elections in 2012 Sarmento no longer stood as a candidate.

On September 22, 2017, Sarmento was appointed a member of the Supreme Council of Public Defenders (Konsellu Superior Defensoria Públika KSDP) by President Francisco Guterres .
