history

German-Korean diplomatic relations

In the middle of the 19th century it was difficult or even life-threatening to travel to Korea as a foreigner because Korea at the time had a closed country policy to protect itself from foreign intruders.

On November 26, 1883, the formal relationship between Germany and Korea began with the signing of a friendship, trade and shipping treaty. On August 11, 1886, the Hanseatic businessman Heinrich Constantin Eduard Meyer was appointed by the Kingdom of Korea as Honorary Consul of Korea in the German Empire, based in Hamburg. Meyer was Korea's first consul abroad and held his office until 1905. He was the owner of an import and export company based in Chemulpo (Korea), which by 1900 had developed into the leading western trading company for European goods in Korea. In September 1899 the first German-Korean language school was opened by the teacher Johannes Bolljahn in Seoul / Korea, initially for 40 students.

From 1910 to 1945 diplomatic relations between Germany and Korea were broken off as a result of the annexation of Korea by Japan. 1956 began the resumption of the work of the consulates general in South Korea and FRG. In 1957 the consulates general were transformed into embassies. In 1957 the embassies were upgraded to embassies after the establishment of diplomatic relations between the FRG and South Korea.
