East Asian Association

The East Asian Association - German Asia-Pacific Business Association (Ostasiatischer Verein eV) - is a foreign trade association to promote economic relations between the countries of the Asia-Pacific region and Germany. It works across industries and is one of the five supporting associations of the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business (APA).

history

The association was founded on March 13, 1900 by 16 merchants in Hamburg with the intention of "establishing an association for German interests in Eastern Asia with headquarters in Hamburg". In 1920, after the loss of the German colonies, he cooperated with the Association for the Far East . At first he concentrated on German interests in China, with Emil Helfferich as chairman from 1934, interest in fascist Japan grew. The building was badly damaged in the World War, Helfferich was arrested and the managing director Dr. Otto Richter brought to the USA.

Tasks and organization

Today the OAV has around 800 members. These are predominantly made up of German small, medium-sized and large companies with interests in the Asian region (approx. 500 member companies). Institutions and private individuals are also represented among the members. The office of the association is located in Hamburg.

Hans-Georg Frey , Chairman of the Board of Management of Jungheinrich AG , took over the position of Chairman in 2014 from his predecessor Jürgen Fitschen , former Co-Chairman of the Board of Management of Deutsche Bank AG. The executive board member is Almut Rößner. She is also vice-chair of the international umbrella association of European chambers of commerce (European Business Organizations Network Worldwide).

The OAV provides information on economic and political events in Asia, organizes events and represents the interests of its members. To this end, the OAV organizes events across Germany such as business forums with representatives from Asian countries and bilateral business days as well as delegation and market exploration trips to Asia. The East Asian Love Supper, which takes place once a year in Hamburg, is one of the most important Asian events in Germany. As a business association, the OAV is in close contact with the federal government, the governments and embassies of the Asian countries as well as with associations and non-governmental organizations. In addition, the OAV publishes the quarterly magazine "Insight Asia-Pacific" (IAP) with articles on current topics in the Asia-Pacific region. In addition, the OAV publishes the Asia-Pacific business manual once a year, which u. a. Contains up-to-date trade statistics and background information on Asian countries.

OAV Young Leaders

The OAV member companies come together in the OAV Young Leaders Program. The aim is to build up our own network in order to exchange Asia information and to deepen existing knowledge. The Young Leaders meet for separate company tours and regular network events throughout Germany and in selected locations in the Asia-Pacific region.

East Asian love feast

The East Asian Love Supper is an OAV event that takes place once a year in spring in Hamburg. It was held for the first time in 1901 with the intention of "creating and facilitating social intercourse among the members and discussing German interests in meetings that were as regular as possible". The guest of honor at the first love meal was Prince Heinrich of Prussia , brother of Wilhelm II. The East Asian love meal is an important meeting for the international exchange of experiences and interests between the members of the OAV. Traditionally, there is a well-known guest of honor and speaker every year.
